Balancing risk and opportunity
Why measure
digital wellbeing?
Digital technologies offer unprecedented opportunities to effect change across all types of human activities, but they also pose risks to achieving a balanced, healthy life. The Global Digital Wellbeing Index (DWI) examines how countries are putting in place the building blocks for the balanced use of digital technologies—maximizing the opportunities offered by digital technology while enhancing individual and collective wellbeing.
Purpose of the Index
How does the DWI support digital wellbeing?
Developed by Ithra Digital Wellbeing in collaboration with Horizon Group, the DWI aims to inform and foster the digital wellbeing agenda, framing the challenge in a way that motivates action. It is a practical tool for the countries included in the index to benchmark policies and practices against each other, guiding stakeholders in their decisions and deliberations.
Establishing a benchmark
How was the DWI developed?
The DWI provides a comprehensive framework for understanding digital wellbeing, informing policies, interventions, and individual practices. It draws on data from renowned sources, a dedicated survey of 35,000 digital technology users, a policy assessment of 35 countries, a literature review, and advice from a diverse panel of subject matter experts.
How is the Index organized?
The Global Digital Wellbeing Index framework consists of 12 pillars, organized into two complementary components: BALANCING NEEDS and CAPTURING OPPORTUNITIES. Comprised of 94 hard data, survey and policy indicators, the DWI provides overall country-level scores out of 100, as well as scores for both components and for each of the 12 pillars.
